Ghosts Make Noisy Neighbours

Opal Mae stared at her fortress of cardboard. She had no idea where to begin. No amount of magic in the world could help with one of the most tedious tasks known to mankind: unpacking.

She'd been dreading this day for a very long time, but she knew that once it was complete, it would make her feel infinitely better.

“How do you eat an elephant?” Ma Violett interjected.

Opal jumped, not expecting to hear a voice outside of her noisy head.

“One bite at a time,” she replied with a chuckle.

“Somebody's wound up like a jewelry box,” Ma Violett said.

“Well, of course I am! How else am I supposed to feel? Look at this mountain! I don't even know where to begin.”

“Well, it's not so easy to do it alone, that's for sure.”

Ma’s hands and knees were covered in fresh dirt, having just come from the forest by the cemetery, scavenging herbs for the apothecary. She snapped her fingers, causing the dirt to disappear in an instant.

“I know! Why don't you pop next door? I heard you and that ghost next door have been getting along. I just passed their grave today and was thinking of inviting them over for supper”

Opal considered it. One of the joys of Harvest Hollow is that settled spirits could enjoy a meal so long as the flavors were fragrant enough to grasp.

“Maybe they'd be open to helping you crack some of these open.” Ma finished, with a knowing smile.

Opal was quite nervous at the prospect of making new friends, especially in an unfamiliar place. “I do like their style, but I didn't think they could leave?”

Ma Violett whisked a book from the next door library nook and verified her monthly wards. “That's the perk of being neighbors with the Guardian Mother. The enchantments I have on the house only keep out unkind ghouls, but friendly ghosts are more than welcome. This is one of the few places they're able to wander to.”

Opal thought for a moment before making her decision. Some company would be the best thing to help with this transition.

“Well, then let me extend the invitation.” She said.

She quickly put on her boots, grateful for the last of the temperate weather, and trekked next door.

Though excited, she had apprehension. Making new friends had always been something that intimidated her. She never quite knew what to say, and occasionally, she felt like many of her friendships had resulted in her feeling abnormal.

She reasoned that was the perk of Harvest Hollow. Most of the residents were also rather abnormal themselves.

She rapped on the door gently and waited for a response. Instead, the door slowly cracked open with a groan.

“That's odd,” she whispered.

She pushed open the door. “Hello? Are you at home? Is everything okay?”

Her voice echoed off the walls like a bat cry in a cave. Cautiously, she wandered in further.

“I'm sorry for the intrusion!” she cried out. “The door was just open, and…”

Suddenly, as she turned the corner, she saw a Poltergeist. An angry spirit that shouldn't be there, smelling of fragrant peony and saccharine strawberry. It turned towards Opal and lunged with a scream!

She quickly shouted an incantation of protection, and banished the spirit. It gave a cry out and disappeared backwards through the living room wall towards the cemetery beyond. Strange things happen when the veil starts to thin.

She quietly wandered upstairs to the bedroom, where she found her friend, Bela, floating above their bed, sleeping soundly. Maybe a little too soundly, especially for someone who had no need for sleep.

Opal had read about this. She gently placed a hand upon the spectral shoulder of her friend and whispered an unbinding incantation. With a start, her friend disappeared into thin air.

Opal held her breath. Had she banished them? Had she released them from their trance?

“Boy, I'm not even sure where I went for a second,” her friend said from behind her. Opal jumped!

“Everyone's startling me today,” Opal said, finally exhaling. “I think you may have an infestation.”

“No kidding. Ghosts really make noisy neighbors, and when the veil gets thin, something changes.” They glanced at their enchanted calendar on the wall “I've been gone for days. It's a good thing someone came to visit or I may have never woken up”

“Well, let's make our way back to my place. I was going to extend an invitation to unpack, but it seems like new wards are in order”

Bela, recouped, grinned. “And I don't mind doing a little bit of unpacking with you. Especially with this new record I found doing my own.”

They floated it toward Opal.

“This is what I always play when I have a lot to tackle.”

Opal returned the smile. “Ghosts have always had the best taste in music.”

Ingredients

🦃 Ground turkey or your preferred ground meat – For nourishment, grounding, and strength
🧅 1 onion, finely chopped – For protection, grounding, and layered flavor
🥚 1 egg – To bind, renew, and bring everything together
🥄 Mayonnaise – For richness, moisture, and cohesion
🍅 Ketchup – For sweetness, comfort, and a little blood-red magic
🥢 Hoisin sauce – For depth, and balance
🧂 Seasonings of your choice – Salt for protection and cleansing
🧀 White cheddar or sliced Gouda – For comfort, richness, and a ghostly white visage
🩸 Extra ketchup and hoisin sauce, or your favorite meat sauce – For a bloody finish and theatrical flair

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Meatloaf
Preheat your oven to at least 350°F (175°C).
Finely chop the onion and crack the egg into a bowl with your ground meat.
Add mayonnaise to help bind the mixture, along with ketchup and hoisin sauce to help keep the meatloaf moist.
Season generously with your favorite seasonings. As the saying goes, if you're not sneezing, it's not seasoned, especially when working with poultry!

    – ✨ A Little Kitchen Magic: Bettergoods Parmesan & Truffle Salt is my obsession and pairs well with meat based recipes.

  2. Mix and Shape
Put on a disposable cooking glove and combine everything by hand until the mixture is evenly bound.
Pack the meat into a ghost-shaped silicone mold.

    – ✨ A Little Kitchen Magic: The ghost-shaped silicone molds used for this recipe were found in the Halloween baking section at Michaels.
    – No mold? No problem! Shape the meat into tiny little mountains to create your own ghostly figures.

  3. Bake the Ghosts
Bake for at least 50-60 minutes at 350°F (175°C), or until the meat is completely cooked through.
Check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer to ensure the meat is safe to eat. Ground turkey should reach 165°F (74°C), while other ground meats may have different safe minimum temperatures that are easy to look up.
Allow the ghosts to rest briefly before carefully flipping and removing them from the molds.

  4. Add the Ghostly Cheese
Place a slice of white cheese over each freshly demolded ghost and let the residual heat melt it.
If needed, return the ghosts to the cooling oven for no more than a minute to help the cheese melt.
    – For lactose intolerance: White cheddar or sliced Gouda may be suitable because these cheeses are often naturally very low in lactose. However, they are still dairy products and are not dairy-free.

  5. Make Their Faces
Once the ghosts have cooled enough to handle, use a chopstick or large skewer to poke holes for their eyes and mouths.

  6. Serve with Bloody Sauce
Mix ketchup and hoisin sauce for a simple, blood-red dipping sauce, or serve with any other sauce you enjoy alongside seasoned meat.
