Preperations

As Ma Violett was just getting a pot on the stove to boil, a loud crash came from inside the Apothecary. She sighed, unsurprised, before removing her apron and swiftly making her way upstairs to check on her granddaughter.

The transition to Harvest Hollow hasn't been easy, but all things considered, she thought they were still doing well enough.

As expected, Opal Mae was taking it a lot harder than Ma. She had been trained to be a Guardian since the day she was born. She's had a lifetime of experience, a natural aptitude, and the Guardian Mother of the Thicket is her own grandmother. And yet, she held more doubt than anyone else about her abilities. In the summer, it seemed like she was adjusting well. Though as fall quickly approached, and the seasons began to change, and the closer The Turning got to Harvest Hollow… the more intimidated she was.

Ever since her first packed box from the Readers' Realm landed in the large ancestral home, she's been studying nonstop, letting her room become a fortress of unpacked cardboard. She’d barely given herself a moment's rest, whipping up new spells, new ideas, constantly writing down every thought that could improve the autumnal months for the little village. Halloween has always been her favorite time of year, of course. So the pressure, the mere idea of hosting Samhain for the Thicket, was enough to make her skin crawl like tiny spiders.

As expected, Ma Violett, upon entering the Apothecary, found a crumpled pile of Opal Mae and her scattered workings on the ground.

"You've always been a bit clumsy, girl," Ma Violett chuckled. "But I have a feeling this has less to do with your two left feet and more to do with your two left brains."

Opal sighed and buried her head in her hands.

"I just can't seem to crack it," she mumbled. "I just want to make sure I get it right."

Ma Violett smiled softly before taking a seat next to her granddaughter, holding her gently in her arms.

"Caring at all is half the battle, little witch," she said.

Opal, still dejected, turned away and buried her head in her lap.

"Do you remember when I used to visit you and your mama on Halloween?" Ma continued.

Opal smiled. "Of course. It was my favorite time of year. It always felt so magical. And with the veil so thin, it was easy to feel all the love I've ever known."

She felt a lump in her throat. She forcibly swallowed. Her eyes became misty, but she still couldn’t cry. She hadn’t since the day she lost her mom.

"Maybe that's why I'm being so hard on myself," she whispered.

"I think so, ma cherie,” Ma said, pulling her in. “ But it wasn't sorcery alone that made the magic that you're remembering. The charm was in the love we had for magic itself. The care that we took for each other. And the consideration we took in making sure that every single moment had the marvelousness of the memory.”

She paused, finding her words.

"We're making new memories here. And now that you're finally in Harvest Hollow, how could things ever go wrong?"

Opal smiled. "You're right. Besides, we still have quite a bit of time and, evidently, plenty of magic to go around," she said, gesturing at the mess of writing around her with a giggle.

"Do you remember, Ma, the recipe you always used to make for me before school in October? When I refused to take off my witch's hat, even on that drafty old bus.”

"Ah, of course, I do. You always loved the deviled eggs, and so I decided to make something better. Something a little bit spookier. Deviled eyes."

Opal laughed. They always used to make Ma's skin crawl, despite how much she loved the recipe.

“Well, come, Little Witch,” Ma said, pulling her back up to her feet, “It’s too hard to think on an empty stomach.”

Ingredients

🥄 Mayonnaise – To bind, enrich, and bring everything together
🌿 Dried mustard powder – For courage, clarity, and a little fiery protection
🦀 Old Bay seasoning – For boldness, warmth, and a spirited kick
🧅 Onion – For grounding, protection, and layered flavor
🍁 A little maple syrup – For sweetness, comfort, and autumn abundance
🌶️ Paprika – For warmth, vitality, and a touch of fire
🎨 Preferred eye color or natural coloring, such as green food coloring, pesto, or hoisin sauce – For creativity, transformation, and a little Halloween magic
🫒 Diced olives – For focus, intention, and the watchful eye
🩸 Red food coloring – For eerie details and a delightfully spooky finish

Instructions

  1. Boil the Eggs
Using an egg cooker or the classic stovetop method, cook the eggs until they are hard-boiled and firm.
Immediately transfer them to an ice bath and leave them for 15–20 minutes to make peeling easier.

  2. Prepare the Filling
Peel the eggs and cut them in half.
Remove the yolks and place them in a bowl.
Add mayonnaise, dried mustard powder, Old Bay, onion, a little maple syrup, paprika, and any of your other favorite egg seasonings.
    Mix until combined.

  3. Color the Eyes
Add your preferred eye color to the filling. Green tends to be the most successful because it contrasts with the yellow egg base.
    – For a natural option: Try pesto or hoisin sauce to color the filling.

  4. Fill the Eggs
Spoon the filling back into the egg whites.
Add a diced olive to each one for the pupil.

  5. Add the Veins
Using a toothpick dipped in red food coloring, draw little veins across the whites of the eggs to create a spooky eyeball effect.
Dip the toothpick frequently as you work. This is completely normal!
